Food and Biotech Research - Based on the needs of the industry
Today's trending topic is...
We work very closely with Iceland's fishing industry in this research work. If we look at our involvement then most of these research efforts have been driven by industry need.
Individuals are not here doing research for the sake of research rather it is to fulfill needs within the industry.
Perhaps the largest difference between our work here in Iceland in MatÃs, and foreign companies similar to ours is that they are looking more to get conclusions for conclusions.
Here we look much more at solving problems for the industry and being ready with the next solution in 1-2 years. When the need arises companies respect us and we respect their contribution and Icelandic. Companies have been assertive in approaching us.
This is probably because 10 years ago a research fund named AVS was established to add value to the fisheries.
Since then collaboration between MatÃs and fisheries companies has increased many times over projects that go through AVS are primarily industry driven research projects.
There are naturally other research funds available to MatÃs for example rannÃs, the Icelandic Center for Research,
where we can apply for grants for basic research and we need to have this alongside our applied research for the industry.
The collaboration between MatÃs and Industry, and MatÃs and the University of Iceland are extremely important.
we're looking at these joint efforts
stretching virtually from the point of catching the raw material, knowing when seasonable raw material is valuable, how to best handle the raw material on board, how and when to create the highest quality products, or quality raw material that goes into processing and then how we develop the material leaving the processing channels.
Whether it is for fresh fillets, fillet products, and then direct to market.
MatÃs is therefore involved in all stages of the value chain in collaboration with companies as well as with educational institutions such as the University of Iceland.
